A small group of Sisters came to the United States from Germany in 1858 to minister to the poor and sick. Today, the United States is the headquarters for the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor and the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Foundation. Sisters in the United States work in a variety of different ministries, including:

Drop-in center for families struggling with alcohol abuse and drug addictions Senior citizen residential community Transitional program for families coping with domestic abuse Shelter and training facility for homeless, pregnant women and their children
