The John XXIII Day Care Center (Jatai)

As a result of poverty, malnutrition and abandonment, the infant and child mortality rate in Brazil is extremely high. The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor along with trained volunteers care for hundreds of infants and children each year at the John XXIII Home and Kindergarten. The children are cared for eleven hours a day so their parents can work. They are given three meals a day, receive love and an experience of family living and are given hygienic training and health care. The day care center serves 170 children daily offering protection and safety to the children and adolescents of low income parents who must go out to work.

The goal is to prepare the young for a promising future by providing a safe social environment with growth opportunities including recreation, after school studies and arts and crafts.
