The Frances Schervier Formation Center (Goiania)

The Center is located in the central western region of Brazil and offers the residents social, educational, and cultural activities. The Sisters promote the education, culture, leisure, and empowerment of the neighborhood residents. The also provide activities involving the socialization and the creation of opportunities for the people of the community including, but not limited to the following:
  • English Courses:
    Two weekly classes are offered divided according to language skill levels with the purpose of contributing to the education of the children in the community. The professor is a volunteer from the Federal University of Goiás who is working on her master’s degree.

  • Music Courses:
    The music courses are divided into the following instruments: guitar, violin, keyboard and singing (choir). The courses are conducted weekly by a student of music from the community. With these courses, all of the senior citizens can have more contact with the marvels and culture that music provides.

  • Community Recreation:
    This program provides weekly leisure activities for children, adolescents, and youths in the community. The program is divided into two classes. One class is directed to the younger children of the congregation and emphasizes development and social skills. The second class is provided by a Benedictine student for adolescents of the congregation to participate in organized soccer. The Benedictine student organizes times for recreation, informal physical training sessions, and the rules and regulations of the sport.

  • Youth Group:
    Under the supervision and counsel of the Sisters and Benedictine Monks, two youths coordinate a weekly meeting whose main objective is the formation of conscientious youths, committed to society and the church, being good on their own, and being good companions and friends.

Needs: Funding for classroom supplies and materials; toys; building maintenance and upkeep; computers and software; salaries
