The faces of human hunger in Dumaguette City, the Philippines are many and diverse. Widespread poverty impacts all ages. Nearly 60% of children are orphans and 1.5 million street kids scavenge and beg for survival. Many of the elderly poor are sick and homeless and have no access to medical care. Responding to an appeal in 2009 from the local Bishop, the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor launched the Shelter of Hope Soup Kitchen. Here children and families receive food in a safe and nurturing environment. Besides nourishment and comfort, the Sisters also offer essential nourishment, comfort and an opportunity for basic medical care, a shower and clean clothes.
